Three years have quickly passed since last we were in the E11 postcode for Noted Pie and Mash. It was another splendid spring day, and I thought I detected a hint of aspiration in Leyton and environs as Edward and I made our way from the tube through the back streets.

When we arrived upon the premises of 481a, everything was refreshingly unchanged, including the celebrated 'Mind the Step' table.

Noted's formidable battery of windowside pails was exactly as I remembered it from last time [c.f. the top picture from our report of 25.04.08]. As I settled down with my spread [far right], I was already in the fine company of the Harvey clan, pictured below.

Joining famed scooting fanatic Pete Harvey [centre] were brother super-marvellous Marvin and daughter Charlotte, who is likely to become official mascot of the club if these sterling mealtime performances continue. Even Dad doesn't like eels, but you will note some filleted chunks on her side plate. These were dispatched with minimum fuss.

But here also were other noted luminaries [not looneys] of the British Heavyweight Pie and Mash Scene, Tom Leader and Len Wilcock amassing 36 and 38 points respectively.

Brian Catchpole has been ploughing a steady furrow all season, and with a respectable 1-3-2-0-2 made triple figures in the league. Do centenarians still get a telegram from the queen these days? Probably an email or text is the best one can hope for: 'Hi, Happy 100. Cheers, HM'.

My dear old china plate Luke Roberts from London's nether regions joined us, champing at the bit for stout English stodge after a month-long sojourn in Mexico.

Terence Cecil had lost his voice but compensated wonderfully with a combination of international sign language, semaphor and morse code. Here he conveys the exquisite flavour of his first course.

Whereas Paul Grice preferred 'the more rounded, meaty flavour' of Noted in Wood Street; these pies were 'not as robust'. Well, he is from Preston after all. Here Paul tackles his dessert, a bowl of eels and liquor with a mash floater.

The shop received a message for the Pie and Mash Club whilst we were there in full pomp. Apparently the lady was in the wrong high street and would be late for lunch. No it wasn't HM the Queen, but recent club associate [and equally as classy] Linda Jones who was a-hollerin down the blower. And she did indeed turn up after we'd gone. Nevertheless it provided opportunity to introduce ourselves to the Noted staff and get some valuable behind-the-scenes shots.

Here is modest powerhouse Les the Pie, the man who made the day most notable. He who quipped: 'You get 15 years for murder; I've been doing this 44 years. That's 3 life sentences.'

Pie Shops have been in the family for 110 years so it could be argued that a Noted Pie is a product with a p[i]edigree.

Out the back I witnessed an oft-discussed but rarely-beheld apparatus; the mighty eel trays of cockney folklore.

Yours truly writes down this web address for the ladies of the shop. What an excellent lunchbreak adventure this proved to be.
